In today’s increasingly health conscious society, tea is quickly becoming many people’s drink of choice. Shopping for tea can be intimidating, with all the different colors and flavors. And, once you’re chosen a specific tea, how do you go about making it correctly? Making tea takes a bit of practice but there are some guidelines that can help you get started. There are only a few things you actually have to remember about the brewing, drinking and making things with tea.

All tea leaves are not the same! Don’t make the mistake of brewing them as if they were. However, some tea, such as green tea, shouldn’t steep for too much time because it will get bitter fairly quickly. Black teas can sit longer and hotter water should be used. A white tea actually tastes better when water below the boiling point is used, (about 170-185 degress Fahrenheit or 76-85 degress Celsius). Another thing to consider is that certain tea tastes the best without adding anything, while other teas taste best with the addition of milk, sugar, honey, or lemon.

Regardless of your personal tastes, there is certain to be a tea to suit them. Green tea features a distinct flavor which makes your mouth feel fresh and clean. Earl Grey is another common tea but with a more citrus twist. Herbal teas have no caffeine and come in an infinite amount of fruit an herbal flavors. Luckily for those parents who try to give their children only the best food and beverages for their growing bodies, kids typically like cold herbal teas because they taste a lot like fruit juice. And herbal teas are generally a healthier option and contain a lot less sugar than fruit juices. Pu-erh tea is gaining popularity with tea connoisseurs around the globe in recent years and is generally post-fermented, although it can sometimes be classified as a green tea as well. Now that you know a little bit more about the various kinds of tea, get out there and try some!

Tea is meant to be drunk, but you don’t always want to drink it all on its own; think about tea snacks. That raises the question of what does tea goes best with. Try a rooibos tea with chocolate and other sweet treats. Green teas are subtle and often go well with breads and fruits. White tea is actually more of a subtle, dainty flavor. Try it with raw fruit and all natural snacks. But tea can also go into food, particularly green tea. One of the forms of green tea is a powder called matcha that goes great as a flavor in ice cream or cookies. But really any tea can be ground extra fine and used as flavoring for say a literal tea cookie.

Some of the most common teas people enjoy are loose leaf tea, green tea and earl grey tea

The versatility and health benefits of tea make it the perfect choice for your next beverage or snack. Play around with different teas and delight in the array of flavors.
