Lines in Fingernails
Look at your fingernails. Take a good look at it. Do you see the lines that run right from the bottom directly to the top? Do you notice it? This is a natural line of the nail. But, oftentimes, when your nails become dry, these lines in fingernails can form into ridges that usually look like dark streaks. It is quite common to see vertical nail ridges, and they don’t pose any danger at all. But it’s not really attractive, and they can get quite obvious as we get older. Normally one can control the appearance of nail ridges by moisturizing the fingernails properly.
Right Nail Conditioners to Use
It is important to note that one should use oil-based nail conditioners as simple creams and lotions that are not sufficiently strong to infiltrate the natural coating that protects the nail. There are many things around the house that you can use to condition your nails such as olive or coconut oil. You could also buy conditioning oil that is specially made for nails.
One effective way to keep your nails moisturized is by using conditioning oils on them. They also reduce vertical nail ridges from appearing. You have to make sure, however, that you leave the oil on for a while, say 10 to 15 minutes, to penetrate through nail.
When you keep your nails moisturized, you will not only get rid of ugly, and hideous-looking vertical ridges, but also maintain your nails’ strength and health. Moisturizing them is important for you to avoid horrible cracks and breaks in your fingernails. Although vertical ridges don’t really pose any threat to our health, you must keep an eye out for horizontal ridges.
What causes horizontal ridges?
These are usually caused by a small break or crack in the nail. They commonly occur along the top where the nail base comes to be the tip. If, however, that the horizontal ridge is discolored and appears to be more than just an ordinary crack, then it’s time for you to consult your doctor. Discolored nails can indicate the presence of a serious health condition.
It is important to give your nails proper care and conditioning. You will not only have healthy nails, but they will look clean and attractive. So, the moment you see these vertical ridges beginning to form, then it’s high time to get your nails in some serious conditioning.
