You will find great excitement and anticipation during your pregnancy.  As the life within her grows, a woman’s body will experience many changes.  Many women begin to feel new stress in their lives as mental, emotional and physical changes take place.  Thankfully, there are things that a woman can do to help alleviate some of these stressors.

  1. Accept that you may not be able to do everything you did before.  In other words, it’s time for a serious look at your schedule.  It’s important that you let your boss know what is going on in your life.  Don’t try to be a hero.  Realize that if there is a little dust in the house, it’s not the end of the world.  It’s important to give yourself much time for rest and relaxation and be especially kind to yourself.
  2. Realize that some things are out of your control.  You may be put on bedrest or have morning sickness.  Some women have to change their diets or eating habits.  Remember that pregnancy is truly not all about you, but is about growing a new life.  Also, once the pregnancy is over, you will be able to go back to your old ways.
  3. Be willing to make some changes in your life as your body changes.  As your pregnancy progresses, you will find that it’s more difficult to get comfortable.  There are some excellent ergonomic products that will adapt to your growing body.  For example, when standing on an anti fatigue mat, it will relieve the pressure in the lower part of the body and provide relief all the way up the back and into the shoulders.  Find new ways and products to bring comfort to your body.
  4. Read books and magazines about pregnancy.  The more you learn and understand about your pregnancy, the easier it will be to deal with the stresses and changes you will experience.  There are also many support groups on the internet where you can chat with other expectant mothers about their pregnancies.  There are also websites designed specifically for pregnant women.  Refer to these sources when you have questions or just need someone to talk to.
  5. Talk to the people who care about you.  Pregnancy can be an emotional time, as the hormone levels in your body are slowly raising as you nurture your growing baby.  Sometimes, you will need a friend or relative to talk to about your frustrations, concerns, and adjustments surrounding your pregnancy.  The important thing is to find someone who makes you feel comfortable, knows you well, and will give you good advice.
  6. Learn how to relax.  Do things that make you feel good.  You might enjoy reading a book, having a massage, sleeping in late, or taking a long bubble bath.  Whatever it is that relaxes you, do it often.
  7. Keep a journal.  During this time of great transformation, you will be surprised at the various emotions you will feel.  Some days, you may be very excited and happy.  Other days, you may feel weepy and vulnerable.  This is where a journal becomes helpful.  You may be surprised to find some patterns in your behavior and feelings if you will write them down in a journal.  You will also find the writing process to be very therapeutic and it will help you to realize that things are not as bad as they may seem.
  8. Incorporate exercise into your life.  During this important time in your life, there are many reasons to exercise.  Through simple exercises, you will be able to stretch your muscles, strengthen your heart and acquire extra energy.  You will find exercise to be a great outlet for emotional stress.  As you exercise, you release hormones that make you feel good and this in turn helps alleviate any depression you may be experiencing.  The extra calories that are often gained during pregnancy can be eliminated through exercise also.
  9. Eat food that is good for you and drink plenty of pure water.  As is often said, you truly are “eating for two” during pregnancy.  However, during this time, it is extremely important that you eat food that is rich in nutrients and of good quality.  You will gain excess weight and put added stress on your baby by eating too many sweets, fats and fast food.
  10. Find ways to get comfortable.  Your life can be made much simpler with ergonomic products.  Pregnancy pillows are one of many great products that may give you some comfort and relief.  It may also be time to invest in some ergonomic office furniture to simplify your life and give your body the support and rest it needs. You will find your work to be easier and less stressful by investing in ergonomic desks, cabinets and chairs.

It takes much energy and adjustment to sustain a new life and the last thing a woman needs is more stress in her life.  Finding ways to reduce stress and enjoy your pregnancy will leave you with memories of a wonderful time in your life.
